How to Check If a Car Is Insured in the UK

Driving an uninsured car is illegal and expensive. Here is how to check if a car is insured in the UK, whether you are buying, lending, or have just been hit by someone.

An uninsured car on public roads is illegal. If you are buying, driving, or have just been involved in an incident with one, knowing how to check if a car is insured in the UK takes less than a minute.

The Motor Insurance Database

The Motor Insurance Database (MID) is the official UK record of insured vehicles. It is maintained by the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) and updated by insurers.

The police use it. ANPR cameras check against it. The DVLA uses it to identify vehicles that have neither insurance nor a valid SORN.

How to Check If a Car Is Insured

The Motor Insurance Database is operated by the Motor Insurers' Bureau and is the same database police and ANPR cameras use. Insurers update it when policies are issued or cancelled.

The check tells you whether the vehicle appears on the database as insured. It does not tell you who the insurer is, what the policy covers, or the name of the policyholder.

The result is one of two things: insured, or not found.

Before buying any used car, run a full vehicle check at check.bad-drivers.uk to confirm the car's identity, finance status, and history - the checks that matter most before money changes hands.

What "Not Found" Means

If a vehicle does not appear on the MID, it is not necessarily uninsured. There are a few reasons a genuinely insured vehicle might not show:

  • The insurer has not yet updated the database (insurers typically update within 24 hours of a new policy)
  • The vehicle was only very recently added to a policy
  • There is a database error

If the car is not on a SORN and is not showing as insured, it is likely either uninsured or the records have not caught up. Contact the insurer directly to confirm.

When to Check If a Car Is Insured

Before buying a used car. An uninsured car tells you the owner is cutting corners. It may also mean the car is not roadworthy or the owner cannot afford to cover it. Run a full history check at check.bad-drivers.uk alongside the MID check to get the full picture - MOT history, finance, write-off status, and keeper records.

Before driving someone else's vehicle. Your own policy may or may not cover driving other cars. Check both your own policy documents and the MID before you drive anything that is not yours.

After a collision with an uninsured driver. If someone hits you and you suspect they are uninsured, note the registration and check it. If they are uninsured, you can claim through the Motor Insurers' Bureau.

When lending your car. If someone drives your car and they are not a named driver, and your policy does not include driving other vehicles or lending, neither they nor the car may be covered.

Continuous Insurance Enforcement

The UK operates a system called Continuous Insurance Enforcement (CIE). Under CIE, a vehicle must be insured at all times unless it has a valid SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification).

The DVLA cross-references its registered keeper records with the MID. If a vehicle shows as registered but uninsured and not SORNed, the keeper receives an automatic warning letter. The fine for keeping an uninsured vehicle is £100, escalating to a court summons and fixed penalty of up to £1,000.

This means you can be fined even if you do not drive the car. Simply being the registered keeper of an uninsured vehicle not on a SORN is enough.

Driving Without Insurance

If a police officer stops a vehicle that does not appear on the MID, the driver can be:

  • Given a fixed penalty notice of £300 and 6 penalty points
  • Taken to court, where the fine is unlimited
  • Have the vehicle seized and crushed

The courts treat driving without insurance seriously. Magistrates have unlimited fining power for this offence.

If You Have Been Hit by an Uninsured Driver

Contact the Motor Insurers' Bureau. The MIB compensates victims of accidents caused by uninsured or untraced drivers. You do not need to pursue the uninsured driver directly.

Keep all evidence - photos, witness details, a police reference number if possible - and report to the MIB promptly.

The Motor Insurance Database (MID) is the official UK database of insured vehicles. It is maintained by the Motor Insurers' Bureau and used by the police, DVLA, and ANPR cameras to identify uninsured vehicles.

Yes. If an insurer has not yet updated the MID after a policy lapses or is cancelled, the car may still show as insured for a short period. The MID is accurate for most purposes but is not guaranteed to be real-time.
