What Does a Category S Write-Off Mean?

Category S means the car suffered structural damage. It can be repaired and put back on the road - but there are risks you need to understand first.

2 April 2026

Category S replaced the old Cat C classification in 2017. A Category S write-off means an insurer declared the car a total loss because repair costs exceeded the vehicle's value - and the damage was structural. Structural means the chassis, subframe, sills, pillars, or floor.

That does not mean the car is scrap. It means the insurer decided it was not worth paying to fix. Someone else bought the wreck, repaired it, and put it back on the road.

What Is Structural Damage?

Structural damage affects the chassis, subframe, sills, A-pillars, B-pillars, or floor. These are the parts that keep the car rigid and protect you in a crash.

Repairing structural damage properly requires specialist equipment and skills. Done right, the car can be safe. Done badly, it is dangerous.

The problem is you cannot easily tell the difference by looking at a finished repair.

How Does a Car Become Cat S?

An insurer assesses repair costs after an accident. If those costs exceed the market value of the vehicle - or a set percentage of it - they declare it a total loss. Category S applies when the damage is structural but the car is repairable in principle.

The insurer pays out the owner's claim and sells the damaged vehicle at auction. Repairers buy it, fix it, and sell it on.

What Happens to a Cat S Car After Repair?

Once a Cat S car is repaired, it must be inspected before it can be registered again. The DVLA marks it permanently on the V5C as a Category S write-off. That marker never goes away, regardless of how good the repair is.

The seller must disclose this. If they do not and you later find out, you have grounds for a claim. But proving suppression is hard, and you still face the hassle and cost of legal action.

Is a Cat S Car Safe to Drive?

If repaired to a proper standard by a competent bodyshop, yes. If bodged together to flip for a quick profit, no.

There is no mandatory reinspection standard for Cat S repairs. Some repairers are excellent. Others cut corners. The marker on the V5C does not tell you which.

You need a full independent inspection from a qualified engineer to be confident the repair is structurally sound. That costs money on top of the car's purchase price.

How Much Is a Cat S Car Worth?

Typically 25 to 40 percent less than a clean equivalent. The write-off marker stays on the car forever, which hits resale value every time.

If a seller is not pricing a Cat S car at a meaningful discount, they are taking advantage of uninformed buyers.

What to Do Before Buying a Cat S Car

Run a vehicle history check first. Confirm the Cat S status, check the date of the write-off, and find out what model and variant is involved.

Then get an independent structural inspection. Not a basic MOT - a proper inspection by an engineer who looks specifically at the repaired areas. This typically costs £100 to £200 from an AA or RAC approved engineer.

Check the V5C for the write-off marker. It should state Category S. If the seller says there is no history but the check shows one, walk away immediately.

Ask for repair invoices. A legitimate repairer will have documentation. If the seller cannot produce any, that tells you something.

FAQ

Is a Category S write-off safe to drive?

It can be, if the structural repairs were done properly by a competent bodyshop using the right equipment. If the repair was botched, it may be dangerous. There is no mandatory reinspection standard for Cat S repairs, so you cannot tell from the category alone.

Does Category S show on a car's history permanently?

Yes. The Category S marker is permanently recorded on the V5C and in insurance and history databases. It never goes away, regardless of repair quality. This affects resale value every time the car is sold.

How much cheaper should a Cat S car be?

Typically 25 to 40 percent below a clean equivalent. The write-off marker is permanent and reduces resale value indefinitely. If a seller is offering less than a 25 percent discount on a Cat S car, the price does not reflect the risk.
