What Is a ULEZ Check and Why Does It Matter When Buying a Used Car?

A ULEZ check tells you whether a used car will trigger daily charges in an Ultra Low Emission Zone. Here is what to check before you buy.

8 May 2026

A ULEZ check tells you whether a specific car will cost you money every time you drive it in an Ultra Low Emission Zone. Get it wrong and you could be paying over £3,000 a year on top of what you paid for the car.

What a ULEZ Check Is

The Ultra Low Emission Zone in London charges drivers whose vehicles do not meet a minimum emission standard. To drive in the zone without paying £12.50 per day:

  • Petrol cars must meet Euro 4 or above
  • Diesel cars must meet Euro 6 or above

A ULEZ check confirms whether a specific vehicle meets these standards before you buy it.

Why the Registration Plate Is Not Enough

Most petrol cars registered after January 2006 meet Euro 4. Most diesel cars registered after September 2015 meet Euro 6. But "most" is not "all."

Two cars of the same make, model, and year can have different engine variants. One might meet Euro 5, the other Euro 6. They look identical on a forecourt and carry the same year on the plate. Their ULEZ status is completely different.

A seller who does not mention the emission standard either does not know or is hoping you will not ask.

Where to Find the Emission Standard

The V5C registration document includes a field for the Euro emission standard. Ask to see the V5C before you agree to buy. If the seller does not have it, that is a problem in itself.

The emission standard may also appear on the vehicle identification plate inside the door jamb or under the bonnet.

The Cost of Getting It Wrong

The ULEZ charge is £12.50 per day. Five days a week into the zone is £62.50. Over 52 weeks that is £3,250 per year.

Buy a non-compliant car for £4,000 and you have spent £7,250 in year one, before tax, insurance, or repairs.

Sellers in and around London sometimes price non-compliant cars lower to shift them quickly. That lower price has a reason.

ULEZ vs Clean Air Zones

The ULEZ is a London scheme. Other UK cities run Clean Air Zones under a different framework. Birmingham, Bath, Bradford, and Portsmouth all have active CAZs.

CAZ rules vary. Some exempt private cars. Others do not. The charge structures differ. If you drive regularly into any of these cities, check the specific rules before you commit to a vehicle.

Check the History First

A full vehicle history check confirms the car's exact specification - fuel type, engine details, and registration information - which you need to run any emission compliance check accurately.

Run a check at check.bad-drivers.uk before you travel to see the car. Two minutes and £3.99 is considerably cheaper than discovering the problem after you have signed over the cash.

FAQ

What does a ULEZ check tell you?

It confirms whether a specific vehicle meets the emission standard to drive in an Ultra Low Emission Zone without paying a daily charge. Petrol cars must meet Euro 4, diesel cars must meet Euro 6. The registration year alone is not a reliable indicator - you need the vehicle's specific emission standard.

How much is the ULEZ charge?

The daily ULEZ charge in London is £12.50. Five days a week into the zone is £3,250 per year. A non-compliant car priced low on a forecourt can cost far more once you add up the charges. Always check compliance before you buy.

Do all UK cities have a ULEZ?

No. The London ULEZ is the largest. Other cities run Clean Air Zones under a separate framework. Birmingham, Bath, Bradford and Portsmouth all have active CAZs. Rules and charges vary by city. Check the rules for each city individually if you drive in multiple locations.

Can two cars with the same registration year have different ULEZ status?

Yes. Two cars of the same make, model, and year can carry different engine variants built to different Euro standards. The year on the plate does not confirm compliance. Check the emission standard recorded on the V5C logbook for the specific vehicle.
